World War II veterans to be honored Thursday at theatre

Messenger-Inquirer - 6/5/2019

June 05-- Jun. 5--There are still 40-plus World War II veterans living in Daviess County, Glenn Taylor Jr. has discovered.

And he's hoping that many of them will be able to attend Glenn Family Services' presentation of the documentary, "The Unknowns," in the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum'sWoodward Theatre at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The funeral home is having Challenge Coins made for World War II veterans.

Certificates for the coins will be given to those attending Thursday night's program, Taylor said.

The coins should be ready soon, he said.

The funeral home hopes to locate all the World War II veterans still living in the county and present the coins to them, Taylor said.

They are 2 inches in diameter, have the insignia of the five branches of the armed services on the back along with the words "Greatest Generation" and flags of Kentucky and the United States on the front.

Thursday is the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

And the showing of the free film is apparently the only celebration of that event locally.

"The Unknowns" chronicles the training of the U.S. Army ceremonial unit that protects the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Justin Bickett, who served at the Tomb from 2004 to 2007, is scheduled to attend the screening.

Taylor said Sheriff Keith Cain will introduce the film and Cathy Mullins, a Gold Star mother, will sing the national anthem.

Several other Gold Star mothers -- those who have lost a son or daughter in combat -- are also expected to attend.

Tickets aren't needed for the screening, Taylor said.

"It's free and first-come, first-served," he said. "We'd love to fill the theater."
