Motorcycle club helps Kings Mountain veteran

Sep. 23—Many bikers get a bad rap, often donned in leather jackets, bandanas and an abundance of tattoos.

But Navy veteran, and a biker himself, Doug McCue said he and members of the Quad County Motorcycle Club Coalition want to change that first impression all while helping area veterans.

"We wanted to dispel some of the negative stereotypes to motorcycle clubs," said McCue. "When we get a chance to show what we have done, that is huge. But we no longer need to be silent. People to need to know what we do."

Formed by motorcycle clubs across the state, the group recently visited Lance Cpl. Art Glennon, a Marine living in Kings Mountain.

Glennon, now 72, recently had a stroke which left him bound to a wheelchair.

Last month, the club participated in a benefit ride and raised $900. A week later, they, along with Chris Pullen of the Concerned Veterans Coalition, showed up to present him with the money and install a sidewalk at his home.

The new slab of concrete that connects the back porch to his garage paved the way for Glennon to get in and out of his home more easily, and Glennon said the money will go toward a wheelchair hoist for his pickup truck.

"He was quite thrilled, and it was obvious that it opened up avenues for him," said McCue.

"When we formed this coalition, we agreed this mission would be to support the veterans," said McCue. "Most clubs have deep respect for the military. There is a lot of appreciation for the sacrifices made by the military."

To raise money, the league hosts several events throughout the year, such as food drives and chili cookoffs and bike rides.
